Serious Mental Illness
|
Human Service Center provides a comprehensive system of recovery treatment and supports for adults with serious mental illnesses (SMI) such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. Evidence-based practices are the basis of these services and include Strength Based Case Management, Motivational Interviewing, Illness Management and Recovery, the Individual Placement and Support Model of Supportive Employment, and Assertive Community Treatment.
Substance use disorders are also common among persons with a SMI. Thus, we address these co-ocurring disorders as part of an integrated treatment approach.

Further, co-occuring primary health care problems are also addressed through an integrated primary health care clinic within the Human Service Center outpatient mental health facility or through assertive referral and linkage depending on individual choice. The internal physical health clinic is a satellite of the local Federally Qualified Health Center, Heartland Clinic.

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)

ACT is an evidence-based model of intensive case management providing services for individuals who meet the criteria of frequent and/or extended lengths of stay in psychiatric hospitals. The staff to individual ratio is 1:10. The program serves individuals from the adult mental health population who have greater needs and can benefit from additional supports.

Supported Employment offers assistance to individuals with a serious mental illness who want to find a competitve job. The Individual Placement and Support model of employment services developed by Robert Drake, M.D., and Deborah Becker, MSW, from Dartmouth College is the approach used. This evidence-based “place-train” model uses rapid job search and provides employment support for an unlimited amount of time. Motivational Interviewing is also used to assist persons to decide if they wish to work.
