Darren originally had no desire to have a driver’s license or to own a car. After he was employed by Kroger for a year, he received his driver’s license and bought a car. Presently, Darren has been employed by Kroger since March of 2005. He works 40 hours a week as a cashier and produce clerk. He receives health insurance, vacation time, and is a member of the union. Darren said sales in his store’s produce department have increased 64% since he joined the department.
Darren moved from the Phoenix House into his own one-bedroom apartment. He has lived there for more than one year. His goal is to eventually own a home of his own.
Darren told his employment specialist, “Being enrolled in Supported Employment has increased my confidence and overall self-esteem. It also allowed me to be able to push myself to achieve my full potential.”
Darren wants to share his accomplishments so that he may inspire others to follow his lead. His advice to other, “Never give up; anything is possible and pursue your dreams.”
